Texas Creek (Class III) - Bighorn sheep canyon
Texas Creek Rapid is the first major rapid encountered on a full day Bighorn Sheep Canyon trip. Passing under the old steel bridge marks the entrance this exciting class III rapid! Rafters will see good-sized splashy waves at nearly all water levels in this rapid. Higher flows produce large waves that are generally quite friendly to paddle crews, although you can expect to get thoroughly wet on a ride through this one!
As your guide steers your crew through the rapid, you’ll notice the river makes a gentle right turn as Texas Creek flows into the Arkansas River. While Texas Creek is typically a small side stream, it is the source for the large rocks, boulders, and debris which formed the rapid many years ago. In fact, most rapids are formed by debris brought into the river from the smaller side canyon!
